Master of Molecular and Cellular Biology

The aim of this major is to give excellent theoretical and practical training in molecular and cellular biology, and in biochemistry, followed by a specialization in these disciplines or in other biology disciplines such as development, genetics, immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics and biophysics. During the course, students of the Master of Science and Technology (majoring in molecular and cellular biology) acquire many skills, both discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary and generic.

The teaching language is French except for 3 "International Master Programs" (PIM) mentioned below.

This degree can also lead to international mobility (Erasmus).


Discipline-specific skills:

  • thorough knowledge of biology in general and specialized knowledge in several fields corresponding to the disciplines taught in this major,
  • mastery of the basic techniques and equipment used in molecular biology, biochemistry and cellular biology that are also essential for all biological disciplines,
  • know how to set up an experiment, from its design to the validation of the scientific results obtained,
  • know how to manage bibliographical resources (databases, online scientific journals, …) and master the scientific literature related to the relevant field of biology when setting up or carrying out a scientific project,
  • ability to summarize data, whether it comes from literature or experiments,
  • know how to make a critical analysis of scientific results.

Cross-disciplinary or generic skills:

  • using own knowledge and being creative to identify and then resolve a scientific problem,
  • ability to learn both theory and through experimentation, and adapt in relation to new information,
  • analyzing different types of document and summarize them,
  • organizing your own work and knowing how to work autonomously or in a group,
  • carrying out a project, taking the necessary initiatives for it to come to fruition,
  • communicating results (oral presentation, posters, written reports) and defending a project against detractors,
  • appreciating the quality and pertinence of a study or a scientific approach whether or not it is your own work,
  • mastering scientific English (certified level B2).

Career opportunities

Training managers in the field of research or research and development departments, both in the public and private sectors. Preparing a PhD which will make it possible to be recruited as a research scientist, lecturer, engineer in the public sector (universities, CNRS, INSERM, CEA, INRA, …) or in equivalent positions in private companies. Certain more vocational streams from this major are directly backed by companies, in particular those associated with France Biotech and ESTBB (Biology-Biochemistry-Biotechnology high School) partners of the Master’s major in biotechnologies, pharmaceuticals, cosmetology, … and lead directly to employment.

At the M2 level, the molecular and cellular biology major offers six specializations of its own, each of which includes several programs:

  • Biochemistry and molecular biology: Biochemistry and Genetics of RNA; Biology and pharmacology of ageing; Structural and functional proteomics; Molecules and Therapeutic Targets,
  • Cellular biology, developmental biology and stem cells biology: cellular biology, developmental biology , stem cells Biology, Molecular basis of oncogenesis and two International master programs (PIM):
    • From molecular developmental biology to biomedicine, evolution and systems biology,
    • Cell and stem cell biology.
  • Genetics and epigenetics: Biochemistry and Genetics of RNA; Genome, Epigenetics and Human Genetics; Molecular basis of oncogenesis,
  • Immunology: Immunology - Immunophysiopathology (I2P); Research on Innovative Immunotherapies & Vaccination” (RIIV); ImmunoTherapy & Bioengineering (ITB) and the International master program (PIM) : Biotherapies and Immunology,
  • Microbiology: Bacteriology, Microbiology - Environment – Health;  Parasitology – Mycology; Virology;  Quality - Environment – Sanitary Safety (two-year apprenticeship course),
  • Biotechnology: R&D biotech-France, R&D biotech-international.

In addition, three specializations shared with other Master majors are also offered:

  • Preparation to the “aggregation”: a specialization which prepares students for the secondary teachers’ competitive examination (shared with the Master of science of the universe, environment, ecology),
  • Bioinformatics and modeling: a specialization shared with the Masters of computer science and mathematics,
  • Biological systems and physical concepts: a specialization shared with the Master of physics and applications.


Access to the Master’s (M1 or M2) depends on acceptance of the students’ application file (and an interview for the M2) by the admittance committee.

To be admitted to the M1, students must have a Bachelor of Life Sciences with solid prerequisites in general biology. In certain cases, chemistry or physics students may be admitted.

The major is also open at M2 level to medicine, pharmacy and veterinary students who have validated certain scientific courses and to students from “Grandes Ecoles” with the necessary skills in the field.

The Master’s is also open to continuing education students.
