Plasma physics laboratory - UMR 7648

The Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPL) brings together teams working on themes like laboratory plasmas and space plasmas, cold and warm plasmas. The teams come from the Laboratory of Plasma Physics and Technology (LPTP, UMR 7648 CNRS-X) and from the Centre for the Study of Terrestrial and Planetary Environments (CETP, UMR 8639, CNRS, UVSQ, Sorbonne Université). The lab was created on January 1st, 2009.

The PPL was established in 2009 to bring together a critical mass of plasma physicists in thermonuclear fusion (project ITER), space plasmas and cold plasmas. One thrust of our laboratory is the study of magnetized plasmas and their instabilities whether in terrestrial or planetary magnetospheres, the magnetic fusion reactors or Tokamak plasma reactors for microelectronics and nanotechnology or air handler.
Another specificity of the PPL is its high proportion of experimenters at the crossroads between physics and engineering. Our work ranges from very fundamental research on turbulence or stability in plasma, to very concrete achievements. We build space detectors on satellites, we carry out prototype plasma thrusters, we develop technologies for the treatment of air or X-ray sources…

Current Projects

The Space Team of the lab works on the construction of instruments to be loaded on the probe Bepi Colombo (ESA / JAXA) which will be sent to Mercury in 2014, and on draft satellite constellation MMS (NASA).
The fusion team prepares the large tokamak ITER project which should see its first plasma in 2017.
The cold plasma team works on developing new methods for treating the air in the reactor design for plasma etching in microelectronics, thin film deposition and development of new plasma thruster.
The hot pulsed plasmas team develops new experimental designs for the production of high pulsed power.
