Oceanographic & Climate Laboratory: experiments and digital approaches (LOCEAN) - UMR 71

LOCEAN’s activity is devoted to the study of processes of ocean variability and interactions with climate variability.

The laboratory is studying a wide range of scales, from the ocean’s vertical mixing and internal waves to planetary motion. Research conducted in the laboratory will deepen our understanding of ocean dynamics and their impact on major chemical compartments (especially carbon in its inorganic and organic forms) in conjunction with the bio-geochemical cycles.

The laboratory also looks closely at the role of the ocean on climate variability, in particular from inter-annual to century, for the past, present and future climate.

  • NEMO, a digital platform to model the ocean, used for fundamental research, operational oceanography, seasonal forecasting and climate studies. Its coordination and development are handled by LOCEAN
  • CARAUS provides measurements of inorganic carbon and related parameters in the Southern Ocean during repeated campaigns. LOCEAN also hosts the SNAPO CO2-analysis service of inorganic carbon and the alkalinity of seawater.
