Master's degree in mathematics and applications

This major covers the whole field of mathematics, with a wide choice of teaching units in M1 and a high degree of specialization in M2, according to the 8 tracks and various majors on offer. Fundamental mathematics is well represented, but there is also a wide range of specializations in applied mathematics such as statistics, probability, numerical analysis, game theory, mathematics-biology, mathematics-computing, engineering and mathematical finance, all of which are likely to attract a large number of students.

Master's degree in mathematics and applications

Presentation

The first year of the Master's program aims to provide or consolidate a common scientific foundation, while preparing students for the specialized M2 courses they are destined to follow.

To take account of the diverse range of courses on offer, and to make them easy to understand, the specialization pays particular attention to information on further study and professional integration at the end of each of the eight M2 courses.

To achieve this, students benefit from personalized support. As soon as they register for the program, each M1 student must choose a Director of Studies (DS) from among some fifteen teacher-researchers, whose scientific profile is specified on the website. He or she discusses the student's career plans with them, advises them on their choice of courses and M2 paths, and monitors their grades and progress. Throughout the first semester, students are encouraged to reflect on their career plans through a series of encounters with the professional world, such as a cycle of weekly "métiers" conferences covering a wide range of career opportunities, the "Atrium des métiers" organized by Sorbonne University's faculty of Science and Engineering, or the Maths Employment Forum organized by the "Agence Maths-entreprises" (AMIES).

Target audience

A solid foundation of mathematical knowledge is required.  Skills acquired in fundamental areas (such as linear algebra, differential calculus, integration theory, topology) are required. Acquired knowledge in more specialized fields will also be appreciated.

The recommended degree for access to Master 1 is Mathematics.

Admission to M1 is based on an application file.

Recruitment at M2 level is open to students from engineering schools who have sufficient mathematical training, or who have completed an M1 at another university.

Job opportunities

  • Opportunities in the private sector at executive level.
  • Various engineering professions: design engineers, research engineers, actuaries, research managers, quantitative analysts in finance, etc.
  • Administrative competitions for the civil service and local authorities.
  • Doctorate: career as a researcher or teacher-researcher.
  • Preparation for 2ndlevel teaching exams: CAPES, agrégation.
