ERC Consolidator Grant Winners 2025

Several researchers working in Sorbonne University’s laboratories have been awarded funding from the European Research Council (ERC) as part of its 2025 Consolidator Grant scheme.

The winning Principal Investigators:

Sorbonne University staff

  • Katharina Schratz, for the ReStruCt project

Katharina Schratz is a professor of mathematics at the Jacques-Louis Lions Laboratory (LJLL - Sorbonne University/CNRS/Université Paris Cité).

The ReStruCt project: from short to long time scales, resonances and structure in computation

Symmetries, conservation of energy and mass, integrability, measurement invariance and diffusion, are all major characteristics of nonlinear systems and intrinsically shape their overall dynamics. In order to guarantee a reliable numerical description of short and long-term nonlinear phenomena that is faithful to the physical interpretation of partial differential equations, it is important to preserve these structures at the discrete level. If not, key information is lost, preventing accurate long-term simulations from being carried out.

The objective of this project is to preserve structure over long period of time, even for highly singular data, because roughness and lengthy time scales are ubiquitous in nature: from the formation of singularities in general relativity to the formation of shocks in fluid mechanics, and from rogue waves in oceanography to signal propagation in optical fibres.

Éva Ternon is a CNRS research fellow specialising in marine chemical ecology at the Villefranche-sur-Mer Oceanography Laboratory (LOV - Sorbonne University/CNRS).

ERC Consolidator Grants

The ERC Consolidator Grant scheme funds exploratory research projects in innovative fields for a period of five years, with a budget of approximately €2 million.

Intended for researchers with 7 to 12 years of experience following the completion of their PhD, this grant supports promising scientists who are looking to develop or consolidate their research team.

Incredibly competitive, ERC Consolidator Grants reward projects of excellence on ambitious and high-risk research topics.
