Research in established and emerging disciplines
The faculty of Science and Engineering conducts internationally recognized basic and applied research in traditional disciplines, including both formal disciplines such as mathematics and mechanics and experimental disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and the life sciences, as well as observational sciences such as geology and biology.
It has also developed cutting-edge research in more recently emerging disciplines, such as climate science, ecology and the environment, computer science, robotics, data science, and AI. Drawing on the dynamism of its community, the faculty supports fundamental research to foster the scientific disciplines of tomorrow and build new interdisciplinary connections.
It supports disciplinary research, which is more essential than ever for renewing approaches and broadening our horizons of understanding in a context where current paradigms are reaching their limits—on the one hand, due to the constant pressure of innovation, and on the other, due to the growing complexity of our globalized and interconnected environment.
