L'IAP est une unité mixte de recherche et un Observatoire des sciences de l’Univers (OSU) de Sorbonne Université et du CNRS qui regroupe des experts en astrophysique et en physique théorique. Les chercheuses et chercheurs de l'IAP sont des observateurs et observatrices, modélisatrices et modélisateurs et théoriciens et théoriciennes dont les travaux portent sur la formation des systèmes planétaires, la recherche et la caractérisation de planètes extrasolaires, l'évolution des galaxies, la cosmologie observationnelle et théorique, les théories de la gravitation et de la physique de l'Univers primordial et l’astrophysique de hautes énergies. L’IAP participe à des grands projets au sol et spatiaux notamment à travers les services d’observation qu’il héberge. Il participe aux missions d’enseignement de Sorbonne Université et héberge en partie le master 2 d’astronomie, astrophysique et ingénierie spatiale. L’IAP soutient un ensemble varié d’actions de diffusion des connaissances.
