Master 2 in Integrative Biology and Physiology - Marine Biology and Bioresources track

The Master BIP - Marine Biology and Bioresources program trains students in all fields of Marine biology (except ecology). Objects and purposes are related to marine organisms and environment through research approaches in biology and life engineering.

Please note that these courses take place in one of Sorbonne University's three marine stations, and not in Paris: in Roscoff, Banyuls-sur-Mer or Villefranche-sur-Mer.

Roscoff marine station

2nd year Master - 1st Semester - 6 ECTS - English Level: B2 (no test required)


Brief Description

The objective is above all experimental. This course will illustrate concretely the notions of physiology of the main functions, integrated at the scale of the organism with the particularities of the marine environment, acquired elsewhere in the track.


Prerequisites

Students must have a basic knowledge of the physiology of organisms and the physiology of major functions.

Brief Description

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:  Describe and analyze the diversity, taxonomic and functional, of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microorganisms in the marine environment, Inventory and criticize the different methods of studying marine microorganisms, Analyze the mechanisms of adaptation and interaction of microorganisms in the marine environment, Design a research project and develop a scientific approach.


Prerequisites

A refresher course on the prerequisites for a good global understanding of the teaching unit is offered to registered students about a week before the beginning of the teaching unit. It consists of a formative quiz which allows to review some basic notions of biology.

Brief Description

The lectures and practical work will illustrate the contribution of marine experimental models (sea urchins, starfish, aplysia) in understanding these fundamental molecular mechanisms. The teaching will also address the interest of these models in the general context of cellular and molecular biology, and more specifically, in the understanding of the regulation of gene expression at the level of translation during the cell cycle and embryogenesis.

Banyuls-sur-Mer marine station

Brief Description

The objective of B2M2 is to offer students a concrete approach to the notion of pharmacological/toxicological biotesting and bioproduction in the marine environment through 5 specific themes.

Basic knowledge of genetics, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology.

Brief Description

The objective of this teaching unit is to analyze the role of light, in its rhythmic component (daily and seasonal) or not, in the regulation of numerous biological activities of living organisms. This objective will be targeted by the study of physiological mechanisms modulated by light and apprehended, at the molecular and cellular levels, in various marine organisms.
