M1 - First year common core

During the first year of the Master's program, students themselves define the units that make up their learning contract. They are assisted by a member of the BMC teaching staff who, after discussion with the student, validates the M1 teaching contract. The organisation of the M1 program, the way certain courses are run, recommendations for the choice of courses and the search for work placements are presented at the first day of the academic year.

M1 - First year common core

First half-year (S1)

Only courses with a title in English are taught in English.

S1 is based on a common core comprising :

  • two fundamental interdisciplinary teaching units to be chosen from the five BMC (6 ECTS each, in French)  and the two Neurosciences (3 ECTS) on offer,

- UM4BM002 : Communication et signalisation cellulaires

- UM4BM003 : Interface système immunitaire/microorganismes

- UM4BM005 : Régulation de l’expression des gènes

- UM4BM007 : Structure et fonction des génomes

- UM4BM008 : Aspects cellulaires des interactions hôtes-pathogènes

- UM4BI036 : Fundamental Neurobiology (Thursday from 2 oct to 26 nov) + UM4BI049 : Neuro inflammation (from 5 to 16 January)

  • a practical workshop (UM4BM100, 9 ECTS) lasting four weeks,
  • a bio-statistics course (UM4BM019, 3 ECTS),
  • a Python for Biology (PyBio) course (UM4BM018, 3 ECTS),
  • an English language course (MU4LVAN1, 3 ECTS) enabling students to take the CLES European certification.

The second semester (S2)

S2 includes:

  • the professional integration course, which is the only compulsory course. Please note that the courses in this UE take place during the first semester, although the credits (ECTS) count towards the validation of the 30 ECTS for the second semester;
  • orientation UEs, which should enable students to apply for a minimum of two M2 courses, provided they have passed at least 12 ECTS recognised by each course envisaged. Only courses with a title in English are taught in English.

In addition to the 12 ECTS related to the subject pathway, the choice of other UE is completely free among the UE of the BMC major (see list of UE) and in the offer of the other master's majors of Sorbonne University within the limits of compatibility with the teaching calendar.

It is possible to do a:

- work placement in France (9 ECTS) or abroad (15 ECTS) in public or private sector laboratories or companies,

- or a project-based learning (4BM292, 9 ECTS).

It is also possible to spend an entire semester abroad, subject to the agreement of the member of teaching staff responsible for international mobility.

The choice of educational contract can be made according to the three proposals presented below:

List of teaching units (UE) in M1

One of the 6 ECTS units in the second semester may be chosen from the entire range of courses offered in the various master's programmes at Sorbonne University and its partners, in consultation with and approved by a member of the BMC teaching staff. Only courses with a title in English are taught in English.

UE in languages, including French as a foreign language (FLE), may be considered (more information).

For all UE courses, course materials are in French and/or English. For some modules, the language of instruction may be English (see module description and course timetable).

M1 calendar

Organization of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Organization of the first semester

The practical teaching unit (MU4BM100) takes place over three weeks on a full-time basis. The fundamental teaching units (MU4BM002 to MU4BM008) take place over four weeks. They take place part-time in parallel with the Python for biology course (4BM019) and the language course (MU4LVAN1, on the Language Department site).

Organization of the second semester

The teaching units in the second semester are organised over three-week blocks (6 ECTS units) from Monday to Thursday, allowing students to take only one unit per teaching block. As some of these courses take place at Sorbonne University's marine stations (Roscoff and Villefranche-sur-mer), the ‘Molecular and Cellular Biology’ Master's department pays for transport and accommodation on site for the duration of the course. The courses offered by other majors take place on Fridays in semester 2.

The work placement in France takes place over a blocked period of 8 weeks from 13th April 2026.
