Joseph Maira et Valarine Kipruto

students of the university of Egerton, Kenya

Witnessing firsthand the impact of human activities on ecosystems sparked my passion for understanding environmental phenomena thus pursuing Environmental Science.
  • Tell us about your background and what led you to study environmental science.

Joseph Maira : I have a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental science and currently finalizing on my Master’s degree at Egerton university. My graduate studies have allowed me to venture into environmental health, I am currently working on Antibiotics in livestock waste and their presence in the environment. The idea of protecting ecosystems, by contributing to solutions to creating a better, healthier and sustainable future led me to study environmental science.

Valarine Kipruto : My background is rooted in a deep appreciation for the natural world and a passion for sustainability. Growing up in a rural community surrounded by forests, rivers, and wildlife, I developed a strong connection to the environment from an early age. Witnessing firsthand the impact of human activities on ecosystems sparked my passion for understanding environmental phenomena thus pursuing Environmental Science.

  • What are your long-term aspirations and projects in this field?

Joseph : My long-term aspiration is to work in the field of environmental science contributing to both science and policy development in attaining a sustainable future in the face of global change.

Valarine : I believe that by conducting research and implementing innovative strategies, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come. If the opportunity arises to pursue a Ph.D. in the field of Environmental Science in the future, I would eagerly seize it as a way to further contribute to the development of this field.

  • Why did you decide to apply for a research internship mobility at SU Sorbonne University?

Joseph : This was an opportunity to gain a more global perspective and research ideas in my career. It offered a chance to network and gain mentorship with experienced faculty and researchers in my field.

Valarine : As a student pursuing a degree in the field of Environmental Science, I understand the importance of gaining hands-on experience and expanding my knowledge beyond the classroom. Sorbonne University, with its prestigious reputation and world-renowned faculty, offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to engage in cutting-edge research and contribute to advancements in their respective fields

  • What have you done at Sorbonne University since you arrived ?

Joseph : I am based at the l'UMR 7619 METIS working with Dr Sylvie Collin. I have been working in the field of Microbiology with an aim of understanding the diversity of soil microorganisms present in polluted soils during bioremediation of contaminated soils by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. I reviewed literature on Benzo(a)pyrene degradation pathway by fungi and bacteria their metabolites, molecular weights and identification of different instrumentation used in their analysis from different studies. As part of my experimental work, I have been analyzing soil mini-columns that were set up with pollutants and Talaromyces helicus fungus at different times, this entailed soil DNA extraction, measuring DNA concentration and purity and the validation of primers to be used for qPCR. I was also been involved in deciding best conditions for primers to be used in the experiment. I have been assisting in detecting genes using a digital PCR, in collaboration with researchers at the Institute of Ecology.

Valarine : Since arriving at Sorbonne University and the ISTeP (Paris Institute of Earth Sciences), I have been actively engaged in lab work, working analyzing fluviatile and lacustrine samples of Miocene age from Uganda to reconstruct paleoenvironments and paleoclimates. Through this research, I have developed a deeper understanding of sedimentary processes and depositional environments.

  • What differences have you noticed between our two universities?

Joseph : What stands out at Sorbonne university is the dynamic global student community and teaching methodologies. The university hosts a number of students from different countries globally and has a vibrant international students’ association and international support office, making it easier for international students to settle in campus and an opportunity to experience a vibrant student culture.  While Egerton university hosts quite a number of international students the cultural diversity at Sorbonne university is rich.

Valarine : Sorbonne University is renowned for its rigorous academic programs and emphasis on research, while Egerton University places more focus on practical skills and hands-on learning. Another difference lies in the campus environment. Sorbonne University is located in the heart of Paris, a bustling metropolis known for its cultural richness and diversity. In contrast, Egerton University is situated in a more rural setting, surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife. This difference in location significantly impacts the overall student experience. In conclusion, while both Sorbonne University and Egerton University offer valuable educational opportunities, they differ significantly in terms of academic focus, campus environment, and resources. These distinctions highlight the diverse nature of higher education institutions around the world.

  • How has this experience been enriching, both professionally and personally ?

Joseph : The internship has given me an incredible level of insight in the field of microbiology, much more than I have gained over the years during my coursework in both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. I have developed a deeper understanding working under the guidance of Dr Sylvie Collin who gave her generous time to explain various concepts and engage in countless consultations during my time at the lab. Getting immersed in a different academic culture has strengthened my resolve to grow and adapt as a person and professionally.

Valarine : Participating in the Erasmus International Mobility Program has been an enriching experience both professionally and personally. Professionally, this program has allowed me to gain valuable international experience that will set me apart from other job candidates in the future. I have been able to develop a global perspective and adaptability which are crucial skills in today's interconnected world. On a personal level, the Erasmus program has exposed me to new cultures, languages, and ways of thinking. This exposure has broadened my horizons and helped me become more open-minded and tolerant towards people from different backgrounds. Additionally, living in a foreign country has taught me independence and self-reliance as I navigate unfamiliar environments and overcome challenges on my own.

  • Do you have a personal achievement or satisfaction to share?

Joseph : I ran successful DNA extractions, PCR and Gel electrophoresis that were quite new concepts to me. I have learnt lots of laboratory skills over a short period and was exposed to different working culture and environment. I am also have worked with a kind team that were available to discuss and help out during my time at Sorbonne university. Well, visiting Paris still stands out as a personal satisfaction.

Valarine : Working in the lab has honed my analytical skills and attention to detail. I have learned how to use various instruments and techniques to accurately analyze rock samples, leading to precise interpretations and conclusions.

  • What message would you give to students who would like to embark on the same Erasmus + international mobility experience?

Joseph : The research internship at Sorbonne university has been extremely beneficial to me as a young researcher. Though, a bit scared of the transition coming from an English-speaking country like Kenya.  I had a great time at Sorbonne University the Professors, administration and students were kind and always ready to help. I also enjoyed the beauty of Paris, scenic view along the seine river that is just next to the campus and the Eiffel tower. My advice to students is to try and apply to the same international mobility program as it offers a chance to gain more knowledge in research and would help them get a better understanding of their fields of study. I am grateful for the time I was able to spend here. I go back home with better knowledge, better experience and having learnt some French words, merci.

Valarine : Embarking on an international mobility experience is a life-changing opportunity that can greatly benefit students in various aspects of their personal and academic growth. For students who are considering pursuing such an experience, my message would be to seize the opportunity with open arms and embrace the challenges that come with it.
